Bhagwant Mann government will have to pay a fine of more than Rs 2,000 crore

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a fine of over Rs 2,000 crore on the Mann government of Punjab for its failure to manage solid and liquid waste. Due to the failure of waste management, there is a huge gap between its generation and treatment.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said that the remedial step can neither be waited indefinitely, nor the health issues can be avoided for a long time.

The bench said, it is the responsibility of the state government to formulate a comprehensive plan to control pollution, which is its full responsibility. This is not being understood. Even if there is a shortfall in the budgetary allocation, it is for the state government to make a suitable plan to reduce the cost or increase the resources.

The bench said that compliance with environmental norms should be on a high priority on the subject of waste management. According to the NGT, the total compensation is Rs 2,180 crore. PLC/GT
