Air India Eyes Multi-Billion-Dollar Widebody Aircraft Order
Leading aviation giant Air India is reportedly in discussions to place a new order worth several billion dollars for dozens of widebody aircraft from Boeing and Airbus. According to industry sources, this move aligns with Air India’s ambitious transformation plan under the Tata Group, further solidifying its position in the global aviation sector.
Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X in Focus
Sources indicate that the upcoming order is expected to include 30 to 40 aircraft, particularly models such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X. However, one source suggested that the deal could involve more than 50 aircraft.
The final details of the order are still under negotiation, with clarity expected around the Paris Air Show in June. When approached for comments, Air India did not respond, while both Boeing and Airbus declined to make any statements.
Air India’s Previous Massive Aircraft Orders
This latest development follows Air India’s historic order in 2023, where the airline purchased 470 aircraft from both Boeing and Airbus. In addition, the airline ordered another 100 Airbus aircraft last year, primarily consisting of narrowbody models.
The upcoming widebody aircraft order signals Air India’s renewed focus on long-haul international routes, a strategic step to modernize its fleet and compete globally.
A Strategic Move to Regain Global Market Share
The purchase of widebody aircraft will significantly accelerate Air India’s modernization drive, aiding the airline in reclaiming its lost share in the international aviation market.
Currently, Air India’s existing order includes:
- 50 Airbus A350 aircraft
- 10 Boeing 777X aircraft
- 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners
The timing of this decision aligns with India’s booming international air travel sector. According to Moody’s local rating agency ICRA, passenger movement on international routes from India is projected to rise by 15-20% by the end of the current financial year. This outpaces domestic air travel growth, which is estimated at 7-10%.
