Kabul, Afghanistan | November 16, 2025:
Afghanistan has officially halted wheat and flour imports from Pakistan, ending decades of reliance on its neighbor for a staple food supply. The decision reflects ongoing friction between Kabul and Islamabad, as well as concerns over the consistency and reliability of Pakistani wheat shipments.

Afghan officials confirmed that the government has now shifted to alternative suppliers, including Central Asian nations, to ensure stable access to wheat and flour. The move is seen as part of Afghanistan’s broader effort to diversify import routes and reduce dependency on Pakistan amid increasingly strained relations.

Economic analysts note that Pakistan’s fluctuating export policies, border disruptions, and political tensions have contributed to Kabul’s decision. The shift is expected to reshape regional grain trade dynamics, potentially increasing Afghanistan’s engagement with suppliers in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Russia.

The halt comes at a time when Afghanistan is attempting to stabilize its domestic food market and mitigate inflationary pressures ahead of winter.
