LPG cylinders ready for delivery as India ensures stable fuel supply amid global tensions

New Delhi, India — April 4, 2026

Amid rising global geopolitical tensions and concerns over potential disruptions in oil supply routes like the Strait of Hormuz, the Indian government has issued a public advisory to reassure citizens that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG in the country.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas emphasized that while supply chains are being closely managed due to evolving international conditions, fuel availability remains stable and there is no need for panic buying.

Govt Urges Citizens to Avoid Visiting LPG Distributors

In a key directive, the government has advised consumers to avoid visiting LPG distributors unless absolutely necessary and instead rely on digital platforms for booking gas cylinders.

Officials noted that nearly 94% of LPG bookings are already being made online, helping streamline operations and reduce unnecessary crowding at distribution centers.

To better regulate demand, booking intervals have been revised:

  • Urban areas: Increased from 21 days to 25 days
  • Rural areas: Extended up to 45 days

Additionally, the implementation of Delivery Authentication Code (DAC)-based verification has been expanded significantly—from 53% in February 2026 to 86% now—to curb black marketing and ensure transparent delivery.

No Fuel Shortage, Govt Clarifies

Addressing concerns about a possible fuel crisis, the government stated that there is currently no shortage of petrol, diesel, or cooking gas across India.

Authorities urged citizens not to engage in panic buying or unnecessary LPG bookings. As a sign of stable supply, officials highlighted that over 5.5 million domestic LPG cylinders were delivered nationwide on April 4, 2026 alone.

Priority Supply for Homes, Hospitals, and Institutions

The government has placed domestic households, hospitals, and educational institutions at the top of the supply priority list.

It also clarified that migrant workers will continue to receive uninterrupted LPG supply, with state governments authorized to coordinate with oil marketing companies for distribution of smaller 5-kg LPG cylinders where needed.

Alternative Fuel Options Encouraged

To ease pressure on LPG demand, citizens are being encouraged to adopt alternative cooking solutions such as:

  • PNG (Piped Natural Gas)
  • Induction cooktops
  • Electric cooking appliances

In addition, the government has taken supplementary measures:

  • Allocation of 48,000 kiloliters of additional kerosene to states and union territories
  • Increased coal supply for small and medium consumers, as directed by the Ministry of Coal

Govt Appeals Against Panic and Misinformation

The Petroleum Secretary recently reviewed the national fuel supply situation with state officials and directed strict monitoring to prevent hoarding and misinformation.

Citizens have been urged to:

  • Avoid rumors
  • Rely only on official updates
  • Practice energy conservation

The government reiterated that while global conditions remain fluid, India’s fuel supply system remains resilient and well-managed.
