The socially driven drama Assi, starring Taapsee Pannu, recorded modest growth at the box office on its second day, raising questions about its commercial momentum despite strong thematic content.
According to early trade estimates, the film earned ₹1.13 crore on Saturday, slightly higher than its ₹1 crore opening-day collection, bringing its total domestic earnings to ₹2.13 crore so far.
Serious Theme, Moderate Numbers
Directed by Anubhav Sinha, Assi tackles a sensitive social issue centered on a survivor’s fight for justice and the emotional and legal challenges faced during prolonged court proceedings. The film explores systemic delays in verdicts and the psychological toll on victims and their families.
Critics say the narrative presents the subject with restraint and empathy while examining the mindset behind such crimes, making it emotionally impactful though not necessarily mass-market oriented.
Cast Performances Highlighted
Alongside Pannu, the film features Kani Kusruti, Zeeshan Ayyub, Kumud Mishra, and Revathi.
Pannu plays the lawyer representing the survivor, portrayed by Kusruti. Early audience reactions have praised the lead performances for their intensity and realism.
Competition at the Box Office
The film faces stiff theatrical competition. O Romeo, starring Shahid Kapoor, earned ₹2.48 crore on its ninth day, pushing its total to ₹51.73 crore and securing a spot in the ₹50-crore club.
Meanwhile, Do Deewane Seher Mein — released the same day as Assi — reportedly collected about ₹1.24 crore on Day 2, bringing its total to approximately ₹2.49 crore, slightly ahead in cumulative earnings.
Box Office Outlook
Industry analysts note that issue-based films often rely on strong word of mouth rather than opening-weekend numbers. Whether Assi can sustain growth will likely depend on audience reception in the coming days and its ability to stand out amid competing releases.
