As the sacred Mauni Amavasya approaches tomorrow, January 18, 2026, millions of devotees are converging at Prayagraj for the highlight of the ongoing Magh Mela – a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam considered the most purifying ritual in the Hindu tradition.

Pandit Ajay Kaushik explains that in Sanatan Dharma, the new moon day holds profound spiritual significance, with Magha Amavasya – also called Mauni Amavasya – regarded as the holiest among the year’s 12 Amavasyas. Scriptures emphasize that bathing, charity, chanting, and observing a silence vow on this day bring positive life transformations.

Pandit Ajay Kaushik explains According to the Hindu panchang, the Amavasya tithi commences at 12:03 AM on January 18 and concludes at 1:21 AM on January 19. Based on udaya tithi, January 18 marks the primary observance day.

This year, coinciding with Sunday, it forms the highly auspicious Ravi Mauni Amavasya. Pandit Kaushik notes that bathing in holy rivers, especially the Ganga, Yamuna, and their confluence at Sangam, absolves sins. Tradition holds that Ganga water turns nectar-like on this day, amplifying the merits of snan and daan manifold. Pilgrims from across India and abroad flock to Prayagraj’s Magh Mela to take this faith-filled dip.

Mauni Amavasya also carries deep importance for ancestral rituals. Pandit Kaushik highlights that offering water, tarpan, and pind daan brings peace to departed souls and sustains family blessings. The day proves particularly beneficial for those with pitru dosha in their birth charts.

Key timings include Brahma Muhurta from 5:27 AM to 6:21 AM – ideal for bathing. Another shubh period spans approximately 12:10 PM to 12:53 PM. After snan, devotees traditionally offer arghya to Surya Dev using a copper vessel with water, red flowers, and rice grains, believed to boost health, honor, and inner confidence.

The day’s defining practice remains maun vrat. Saints, ascetics, and numerous devotees maintain complete silence, which Pandit Kaushik says purifies mind and speech, fosters mental peace, and conserves spiritual energy. This makes Mauni Amavasya perfect for self-reflection, restraint, and sadhana.

In essence, the occasion blends religious observance with profound inner cleansing and mental equilibrium, strengthening practitioners from within.
