BJP-Mahayuti Celebrates BMC Election Win in Mumbai

Mumbai, Maharashtra | January 16, 2026

The Maharashtra municipal elections have delivered a significant political message as the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance recorded a historic performance in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The country’s richest civic body witnessed a sweeping mandate in favor of the Mahayuti, giving the alliance a strong and clear majority after years of political instability in Mumbai.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the results as “a blessing from Balasaheb Thackeray” and called the victory a reflection of citizens’ faith in development-driven governance. He said the mandate signals Mumbai’s desire for a stable administration after a prolonged period of political flux.

BJP Credits Leadership and Organization for the Victory

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attributed its victory to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party president JP Nadda, and Home Minister Amit Shah. The party emphasized that the results validate public confidence in its governance model, which prioritizes development, transparency, and efficient civic management.

BJP leaders also highlighted the contribution of grassroots workers, state leadership, and local-level strategists who played a crucial role in the campaign.

Why the BMC Victory Matters

Political observers note that the BMC’s control holds immense strategic importance:

  • It is India’s wealthiest municipal corporation, influencing the political landscape beyond Mumbai.

  • Administrative and political decision-making in the city is closely tied to BMC leadership.

  • The Mahayuti’s strong lead signals rising urban support for the BJP and Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

  • Voters appear to have prioritized stability and continuity in development projects.

Fadnavis said the mandate reflects the collective efforts of party workers and the public’s belief in the administration’s long-term vision.

Opposition Faces Major Setback

Reacting to the results, Union Minister Piyush Goyal launched a sharp critique of the opposition, claiming that the Congress, Uddhav Thackeray faction, and Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP have been limited to minimal seats. He said that voters rejected “negative politics and fragile alliances,” giving a decisive mandate for a stable government after years of uncertainty.

Goyal added that the Uddhav and Raj Thackeray-led alliance received a “moral verdict” from the electorate as voters chose development over political rivalry.

Statewide Momentum for the BJP

Following the sweeping results, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis personally congratulated state BJP president Ravindra Chavan and Mumbai BJP chief Amit Satam. He is expected to visit the party’s Mumbai headquarters later today to address workers and celebrate the win.

‘Two-Thirds Majority Expected’: Chandra Shekhar Bawankule

Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandra Shekhar Bawankule said the BJP is on track to secure a majority across municipal bodies and predicted that the Mahayuti will achieve a two-thirds majority in the BMC.

According to trends, the BJP and its ally, the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), are leading in 210 out of 227 BMC wards. Bawankule also highlighted strong performance in Nagpur, crediting the city’s development vision led by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and CM Fadnavis.

He added that the public has once again expressed confidence in the “double-engine government” of Prime Minister Modi at the Center and Fadnavis in the state.

Voting for 29 municipal bodies was held on Thursday, and counting began on Friday.
