Actor Vijay Thalapathy appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi on Monday for questioning related to the Karur stampede case, a tragic incident that took place during a political gathering in September 2025. The CBI had issued a notice to the actor last week, directing him to join the investigation.
Vijay arrived at the CBI headquarters at around 11:00 AM and underwent nearly seven hours of questioning before leaving the office around 6:30 PM. According to officials familiar with the matter, the actor has been asked to appear again on Tuesday as part of the ongoing probe.
The stampede occurred on September 27, 2025, during a public meeting organized by Vijay’s political party, Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The incident resulted in the deaths of at least 41 people, while more than 110 others were injured, prompting widespread concern and a high-level investigation.
CBI officials confirmed that several TVK office-bearers have also been questioned in recent days. The agency, acting on the Supreme Court’s direction, formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to handle the case. The CBI is currently examining witness accounts, event footage, and organizational lapses that may have contributed to the tragedy. Sources indicated that a chargesheet may soon be filed once evidence collection is complete.
The interrogation has triggered political debate in Tamil Nadu. DMK leader Saravanan Annadurai questioned why witnesses and individuals linked to the case were being summoned to New Delhi instead of Chennai, where the CBI also operates an office. He called the move “against criminal law norms” and asked why the investigation could not be conducted locally.
Following the stampede, Vijay had issued a public apology on social media, expressing condolences to the families of the victims. Despite this, he faced intense criticism online, with several users blaming him and his party for the crowd mismanagement that led to the fatal incident.
Vijay, who is also in the news for his upcoming film “Jana Nayagan,” has not commented publicly on the latest round of questioning.
