While 2025 saw theatrical releases only from Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, fans missed seeing Shah Rukh Khan on the big screen. The year 2026, however, is shaping up to be massive for Bollywood, with Shah Rukh Khan returning as King and Salman Khan reportedly playing a soldier in his next film. Aamir Khan, too, is quietly gearing up for a major comeback that has now sent fans into celebration mode.
After delivering a successful comeback in 2025 with ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’, which emerged as a box office hit, and making a special cameo in Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’, Aamir Khan is now preparing for what could be one of the most anticipated sequels in Indian cinema — ‘3 Idiots Part 2’, tentatively titled ‘4 Idiots’.
‘3 Idiots’ Sequel Officially in the Works
Released on December 25, 2009, ‘3 Idiots’, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, became a cultural phenomenon. Starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi, and inspired by Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone, the film redefined mainstream Hindi cinema with its message-driven storytelling and iconic characters — Rancho, Farhan Qureshi, and Raju Rastogi.
Now, more than 16 years later, the beloved franchise is finally set to return.
When Will ‘4 Idiots’ Go on Floors?
According to recent reports, Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani are fully aligned to revisit the world of ‘3 Idiots’. The director-actor duo is reuniting for the sequel, with plans to bring back the original cast, including Kareena Kapoor Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi.
Sources indicate that Rajkumar Hirani aims to take the film on floors by mid-2026, with production expected to begin between June and July 2026.
Script Status and Development Update
Work on the sequel is progressing steadily. The core storyline has been locked, and the screenplay is expected to be completed within the next few months. While the makers are keeping plot details tightly under wraps, the film is said to retain the emotional depth and social relevance that made the original a timeless classic.
Dadasaheb Phalke Biopic Put on Hold
Interestingly, following Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani were initially expected to collaborate on a Dadasaheb Phalke biopic, which was slated to begin production in January 2026. However, that project has now been temporarily shelved.
Reports suggest Aamir Khan was not fully satisfied with the script, and despite revisions, creative differences remained unresolved. As a result, the biopic has been paused, clearing the path for ‘4 Idiots’ to move forward.
