San Francisco, November 14, 2025 — Tech innovator Elon Musk has officially rebranded xAI’s knowledge platform Grokipedia as “Encyclopedia Galactica,” announcing a sweeping vision to create one of the world’s most advanced open-source knowledge systems.
Inspired by Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series, the newly renamed platform aims to expand far beyond traditional digital encyclopedias. xAI plans to integrate multimedia archives, scientific datasets, historical material, cultural records, and AI-generated insights into a unified, globally accessible repository.
According to xAI, Encyclopedia Galactica will operate as a self-updating AI knowledge engine, continuously aggregating information from verified sources and enhancing it with contextual explanations. Researchers, developers, creators, and the public will be able to contribute and collaborate through open-source modules.
Musk described the project as a step toward “preserving and expanding humanity’s collective understanding for future generations.” The company said it will release key framework components as open-source software to ensure transparency, innovation, and worldwide participation.
