“India may be polio-free, but neighbouring countries still report cases. Weakening surveillance is risky — it’s like turning off the radar while planes are still flying,” said Dr Aashish Chaudhry, senior epidemiologist.

India’s NPSN has been crucial in detecting virus traces and preventing outbreaks since 1997. Experts argue that dismantling it could leave blind spots, allowing polio — or similar viruses — to slip back undetected.
