The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially declared the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon, marking the end of a season that brought widespread rainfall to most parts of India. However, the northeast monsoon has begun in southern states, bringing intermittent rainfall to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

“Monsoon withdrawal is a routine seasonal transition, but timely rainfall is crucial for agriculture, water reservoirs, and daily life. Farmers in southern India are advised to monitor rainfall patterns closely,” said IMD Director-General Dr. M. Mohapatra.

The northeast monsoon, often termed the retreating monsoon, is vital for crops such as rice, sugarcane, and pulses. Tamil Nadu and Kerala have already reported showers, benefiting water levels in dams and groundwater reserves. Coastal Andhra Pradesh is expected to see moderate rainfall in the coming days.

Weather experts emphasize that this seasonal shift brings not only rain but also changes in temperature and humidity. “Southern India should brace for slightly higher humidity and localized thunderstorms during this period,” noted Dr. Priya Rao, a senior meteorologist.

In addition to agricultural importance, the northeast monsoon also plays a key role in festive planning. With Diwali approaching, residents are advised to follow weather updates to avoid disruption of celebrations and travel plans.

Quote: “Rain is a blessing for farmers and the environment, but citizens must stay alert for sudden showers and traffic impacts,” Dr. Mohapatra added.

IMD’s official forecasts will continue to guide disaster preparedness, especially in flood-prone regions of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Authorities urge coastal communities to take precautions against heavy rainfall and localized waterlogging.
