New Delhi — : A surge in monsoon activity has prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in several regions. The alerts are in place for Monday, June 23, with forecasts signaling intensified weather patterns in the days ahead.
Rain and Gusty Winds Expected in Delhi
Delhi residents are bracing for light to moderate rain and strong winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h, according to the IMD forecast. These conditions are expected to persist through Monday, supported by increased atmospheric moisture levels.
Temperature data from Sunday shows Delhi’s maximum temperature at 36.2°C, about 1.3°C below average, while the minimum temperature remained at 28.4°C. At 5:30 PM, relative humidity was recorded at 78%, indicating a strong likelihood of continued rainfall.
The monsoon impact has led to a notable improvement in air quality. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported an AQI of 98 at 4 PM Sunday, categorizing it as ‘satisfactory’. This improvement is attributed to the rainfall and winds effectively dispersing dust and pollutants from the atmosphere.
Uttar Pradesh Under Heavy Rainfall and Lightning Warnings
Uttar Pradesh is experiencing widespread monsoon showers across both eastern and western regions. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for 19 districts, warning of heavy downpours, while also signaling the risk of thunderstorms and lightning across 52 districts.
The highest rainfall on Sunday was recorded in Lalitpur, where 132 mm of precipitation was noted. Other districts — including Lucknow, Balrampur, Gonda, Basti, Deoria, Siddharthnagar, and Ayodhya — witnessed light to moderate rainfall, reinforcing the IMD’s forecast for sustained monsoon activity.
The IMD cautions that urban and low-lying areas in these regions may experience waterlogging, power outages, and isolated incidents of fallen trees or structural damage, particularly where infrastructure is already vulnerable.
Thunderstorm and Lightning Alert Issued for 52 Districts
Beyond heavy rainfall, the IMD’s advisory extends to the risk of thunderstorms and cloud-to-ground lightning strikes in 52 districts of Uttar Pradesh. Authorities are urging residents in these areas to remain indoors during severe weather, avoid seeking shelter under trees or power lines, and take appropriate precautions.
The combination of saturated ground conditions, strong winds, and electrical storms increases the likelihood of short-term hazards in both rural and urban zones. District administrations have been asked to activate local response units to manage any emergency arising from weather disruptions.
