Ahmedabad – : The massive tragedy unfolded shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport as an Air India aircraft crashed into a residential area, killing nearly everyone on board. The ill-fated flight had 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Shockingly, only one person survived and is currently receiving treatment.
The Tata Group, which owns Air India, has stepped forward with a heartfelt statement and an aid package for the victims’ families. Chairman N Chandrasekaran, expressing deep sorrow on social media, said, “We are devastated by the tragic incident involving Air India Flight 171. Words cannot express our grief. To support the affected families, Tata Group has announced ₹1 crore ex-gratia compensation for each deceased passenger’s family. The company also confirmed it will cover all medical expenses for the injured and ensure they receive complete care and rehabilitation. Additionally, Tata will help rebuild the BJ Medical College hostel, which was severely damaged in the crash.
Chaos at Ahmedabad Airport After the Crash
Soon after the crash, all flight operations at Ahmedabad Airport were suspended. With multiple flights canceled or diverted, thousands of travelers found themselves stranded at the airport. Responding swiftly, the Western Railway announced that it would run additional trains from Ahmedabad to ease passenger distress and help them reach their destinations safely.
Nation in Mourning, Rescue Efforts Continue
Emergency services, NDRF teams, and local authorities are on-site, continuing rescue and relief operations. The wreckage is being cleared while investigators begin examining the black box and cockpit recordings to determine the cause of the crash.
With nearly every passenger on board confirmed dead, and widespread infrastructure damage reported in the residential block where the aircraft crashed, the entire nation has been shaken. The incident is being considered one of India’s worst aviation disasters since 1996.
Government officials, aviation experts, and airline authorities are now under pressure to investigate the safety protocols, aircraft maintenance logs, and the decision-making leading up to this tragedy.
Financial Help, Emergency Support, and Community Aid Begin
Along with Tata Group’s aid, state authorities are coordinating shelters, food, and medical aid for those displaced due to the crash. Helpline numbers have been issued for families of passengers to seek updates and psychological support.
