New Delhi : The last Friday was a very important day for India’s defense sector. The first consignment of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile manufactured in India has reached the Philippines. The missile has been supplied to the Philippines under an agreement. A deal worth US $ 375 million was signed between the two countries for this weapon system in 2022. This is an important step for India towards export of defense equipment. At the same time, this deal also has meaning for the Philippines. Philippines’ tension with China is increasing due to continuous skirmishes in the South China Sea. At such a time, the missile system received by the Philippines is very important.
According to the information, the deal for BrahMos was conceptualized in early 2017. At that time, the Office of the President of the Philippines had approved its inclusion in one of the priority projects. Both sides wanted to reach an agreement in early 2021, but the plan was delayed due to the Corona pandemic.
India has exported BrahMos supersonic missiles for the first time. Actually, India has started supplying BrahMos supersonic missiles to the Philippines. Under this, the first consignment of BrahMos supersonic missiles reached the Philippines on Friday. The deal includes the delivery of three batteries, training for operators and escort as well as the required Integrated Logistics Support package. The BrahMos supersonic missile has a range of 290 km and can carry a 200 kg warhead.
Philippines has become the first country to purchase BrahMos missile system. This supply has been made under an agreement signed two years ago. In fact, a deal worth US $ 375 million was signed between the two countries for this weapon system in 2022. BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) had signed the contract with the Department of National Defense of the Philippines on January 28, 2022 for the supply of shore-based anti-ship missile system to the Philippines. Let us tell you that BAPL is a joint venture company of Defense Research and Development Organization.
