Karachi : Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the country’s national carrier, is facing severe operational challenges with the recent cancellation of 48 flights across both domestic and international routes. The primary reason? A significant fuel shortage.

Immediate Flight Disruptions

A PIA spokesperson confirmed that the airline had to cancel a considerable number of flights due to limited fuel supply and ongoing operational issues. This cancellation affected 13 domestic flights and 11 international routes. Additionally, 12 other flights experienced delays. For the convenience of affected passengers, PIA has made arrangements to transfer them to alternative flights.

Checking Flight Status

In light of these disruptions, PIA has issued an advisory for its passengers. Before heading to the airport, they are encouraged to verify the status of their flights. This can be done by reaching out to PIA customer care, visiting PIA offices, or consulting with their respective travel agents.

Underlying Fuel Crisis

The root of PIA’s fuel crisis traces back to the state-owned Pakistan State Oil (PSO). Due to unpaid dues, PSO suspended its fuel supplies to PIA. This has further strained the already fragile operational capacity of the airline.

Financial Struggles of PIA

PIA’s current predicament isn’t just about the fuel crisis. The airline, already teetering on the edge of collapse, is grappling with massive accumulated debts. There have been talks about moving towards privatization as a potential solution. However, the situation has been exacerbated by the Pakistan government’s decision not to allocate Rs 23 billion for the airline’s operating expenses. Despite multiple pleas from PIA, this financial assistance has not been forthcoming.

On a daily basis, PIA needs Rs 100 million from PSO for fuel. However, with PSO insisting on advance cash payments and PIA’s inability to meet these demands, the future looks bleak. This financial deadlock significantly raises the likelihood of more flight cancellations in the coming days.

In Conclusion

The future of Pakistan International Airlines hangs in the balance. As the airline navigates its financial woes and the immediate fuel crisis, passengers are advised to stay informed and be prepared for potential disruptions.
