London : In a significant crackdown on illegal immigration, enforcement officers in the UK have arrested 105 foreign nationals from over 20 cities who were found to be working illegally in the country. The nationwide campaign, led by the Home Office, involved more than 300 immigration officers per day targeting commercial premises such as restaurants, car washes, nail bars, barbershops, and convenience stores.
The Home Ministry stated that the suspects were apprehended for engaging in illegal activities and possessing false documents, with cash seized at some locations. Out of those arrested, over 40 individuals were detained by the Home Office for potential deportation from the UK, while the remaining suspects were released on immigration bail. It is expected that a number of arrests will result in voluntary departure from the UK. The individuals involved in illegal work represented more than 20 different nationalities.
Home Secretary Suella Braverman emphasized that illegal employment not only harms communities but also displaces honest workers and defrauds the public due to the absence of tax payments. The government is committed to addressing the abuse of laws and borders, as outlined by the Prime Minister. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak participated in a morning commute in Brent, north London, to observe immigration enforcement officers in action as part of a day of action.
This approach aims to disrupt the business model of criminal gangs that lure individuals to the UK illegally by offering black market jobs. In the first quarter of 2023, immigration enforcement teams conducted 1,303 enforcement visits, marking a 57 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Since the Prime Minister launched his plan to prevent illegal crossings in December 2022, arrests have doubled in comparison to the corresponding period the previous year.
