Mumbai -: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has recently made a significant announcement regarding the withdrawal of the Rs 2000 note. As a result, individuals now need to deposit their Rs 2000 notes back into the banks. The deadline for this deposit is set for September 30, 2023. Following the withdrawal of the Rs 2000 note, the highest denomination note in the country will be the Rs 500 note. It is crucial for people to be able to distinguish between genuine and counterfeit Rs 500 notes, considering their continued circulation.

The front side of the Rs 500 note features a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, an iconic figure in Indian history. Additionally, the note bears the signature of the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, adding to its authenticity. On the reverse side of the note, you will find a depiction of the “Red Fort,” a historical monument that symbolizes India’s rich cultural heritage. The base color of the note is stone grey, complemented by various designs and geometric patterns that harmonize with the overall color scheme on both sides.
How to identify fake Rs 500 notes
The Reserve Bank of India has provided specific features to help identify genuine Rs 500 notes. By recognizing these features, you can easily distinguish between real and counterfeit notes. Familiarizing yourself with these details is essential for every citizen to safeguard against counterfeit currency. Let’s explore the key characteristics of genuine Rs 500 notes:
Watermark: Hold the note against the light to observe a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, along with a watermark displaying the denomination value.
Security Thread: Look for a vertical, embedded security thread on the left side of the note. This thread appears as a continuous line and can be seen when held against the light. It also contains the words “Bharat” (in Hindi) and “RBI” in microletters.
Intaglio Printing: Run your fingers over the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, the Ashoka Pillar emblem, and the numeral “500” on the note. Genuine notes have raised printing, giving a distinctive feel.
Microlettering: Examine the area near the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi with a magnifying glass. Genuine notes have microlettering of the RBI’s name, “भारत” (in Hindi), and “INDIA” on the left side of the note.
See-through Register: Hold the note against the light to locate a floral design printed on the left side that aligns perfectly with the same design on the reverse side.
Latent Image: Tilt the note to observe a latent image of the numeral “500” and the word “RBI” that appears when viewed from different angles.
Color-Shifting Ink: Observe the numeral “500” on the bottom right corner of the note. When tilted, the color of the ink changes from green to blue or brown.
Swachh Bharat Logo: The reverse side of the note includes a Swachh Bharat logo, symbolizing India’s nationwide cleanliness campaign.
