UNION MINISTER OF TEXTILES DISTRIBUTED EXPORT AWARDS TO HANDICRAFTS EXPORTERS

Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister of Textiles, Govt. of India distributed 58 award for excellence in exports to Handicrafts exporters including   life time achievement awards  for rendering outstanding services to Handicrafts sector by five eminent exporters of India.  The top export award for all items of handicrafts  was given to M/s Designco, Moradabad.

In all 22 trophies, 5 Life Time Achievement Awards and 31 Merit Certificates were distributed to 58 persons.

Life time achievement awards were  given to Mr. Sam Vadera of Gurgoan, Mr. M.L. Sharma, New Delhi, Mrs. Vasu Dev Pahwa of New Delhi, Mr. K.N. Sachdev, New Delhi and Mrs. Leela Bordia of Jaipur for their  outstanding services to Handicrafts sector.

The export award was introduced in 1989 by Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts under aegis of Development Commissioner [ Handicrafts], Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India.  The objective is to create sense of healthy competition amongst the exporters and to encourage them for holistic competition in achieving excellence in export performance in order to qualify for award.  These awards  encourage those who have received awards to do better in future and also encourage those who have not received award to try and do better so that they also receive award in future.  The export award is a coveted recognition and the award adds to the status of the company and their credibility in the International market.

The distribution of export awards was held at a colourful ceremony.  Union Cabinet Minister of Textiles Thiru Dayanidhi Maran gave away the awards.   Mrs. Panaabaka Lakshmi, Minister of State for Textiles, Mrs. Rita Menon, Secretary Textiles, Shri R.N. Choubey, Development Commissioner [ Handlooms], Textiles, Mrs. Alka Arora, Addl. Development Commissioner [ Handicrafts], Shri A. Sakhthivel, President, Federation of Indian Export Organisations, Mr. Raj Kumar Malhotra, Chairman-EPCH, Mr. Rakesh Kumar, Executive Director- EPCH were present during the ceremony.    Other luminaries from the trade and industry, officials of the Government, Industry association and members of the foreign buying community were also present in India.

Thiru Maran congratulated EPCH for the outstanding performance of Handicrafts Sector by surpassing the export target fixed for the entire year in the first nine months itself.  He also lauded the actions of the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts in revising the export target from USD 2200 million to USD 2500 million.  He expressed his confidence that this revised target will be achieved by the Handicrafts sector in the 3rd quarter itself keeping in view the present trends in exports.  Thiru Maran laid emphasis on the system of export awards as it helps greatly in redoubling the efforts by exporters in increasing their performance.  The Minister stated that the work profile of the EPCH has been so successful that they have succeeded in securing two big projects from the Government viz. a Resource Centre at Moradabad involving an outlay of Rs. 5.00 crores for Design and Display Library and another at Narsapur[Andhra Pradesh]  for a Lace and Lace Products display centre and library involving an outlay of Rs. 15 crores.

The Minister was full of appreciation of the excellent work being done by the exporting community and Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts.  He exhorted and advised the exporters and the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts to keep the momentum intact and do much better in future.  The Minister wished to see young entrepreneurs’ receiving the award next year.

Smt. Rita Menon Secretary Textiles made a brief presentation on the work done by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts[EPCH], National Centre for Design and   Product  Development[NCDPD]  under the aegis of Ministry of Textiles in infrastructure creation, capacity building, skill development,  design and product development and measures for meeting environmental and social compliances.  Smt. Menon made a specific mention of the aggressive marketing undertaken by EPCH in hitherto unexplored and under explored markets in regions like Latin America, Middle East and Central Asia by organizing repetitive Folk Craft festivals, Brand Image promotion activities like Buyer-Seller-Meet to develop awareness about Indian products and interest of the consumers in the same.

The export of handicrafts during 2009-10 was 8718.94 crore in rupees and 1830.23  in million   US $ said Mr. R.K. Malhotra, Chairman – EPCH.

The export target for the year 2010-11 has been USD 2200 million.  During the first two quarters i.e. April – Sept., 2010, the Council has achieved the target and registered a growth of 22.34% during the same period over the last the year.  The exports for April – Nov., 2010-11 was to the tune of 5237.57 crore in rupees and 1139.02 in million US $.  Mr. Malhotra also announced that  the export target has thus been revised for 2010-11 from US $ 2200 to US $ 2500 millions.
