Tirupati Temple Cracks Down: 18 Non-Hindu Employees Removed

Tirupati Temple Controversy Latest

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the governing body of the renowned Tirupati Temple, has taken decisive action against 18 non-Hindu employees. These individuals have been directed to either opt for transfer to government departments or voluntary retirement (VRS). The move aligns with TTD’s commitment to preserving the spiritual purity of its temples and associated religious activities.

Reason Behind the Decision

The decision was made in response to reports that these employees were participating in both TTD festivals and rituals, as well as non-Hindu religious activities. Such participation was deemed inconsistent with the sanctity of Lord Venkateswara’s temple. The board has thus issued disciplinary orders mandating their removal.

Statement from the TTD Chairman

TTD Chairman B.R. Naidu clarified that the step was taken to ensure that only devotees of Hinduism serve in roles related to temple management and rituals. The board has unanimously approved the measure, reinforcing its long-standing policy regarding the employment of non-Hindus within the temple premises.

Options Given to the Employees

The 18 employees have been given two choices:

  1. Transfer to Other Government Departments: Employees may choose to move to roles in municipal corporations, revenue departments, or other government entities in Andhra Pradesh.
  2. Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS): Those unwilling to transfer can opt for an early retirement plan under TTD’s VRS policy.

TTD’s Previous Resolution on Non-Hindu Employment

In November 2024, TTD passed a resolution mandating that all non-Hindu employees either opt for VRS or request reassignment to other government departments. The latest action follows through on that resolution, reinforcing the Hindu-only employment policy within the temple’s ecosystem.

TTD’s Strict Guidelines for Maintaining Religious Integrity

Ban on Political Statements in Tirumala

Apart from the action against non-Hindu employees, TTD has also passed a resolution banning political statements within Tirumala. Any violations or promotions of political propaganda within the temple premises will result in legal consequences.

Temple Purity and Employment Policies

TTD maintains that employees working within Hindu religious institutions must uphold and respect the faith. All staff members are required to follow temple norms, ensuring that no conflict arises between their personal beliefs and their professional responsibilities.

Regular Audits and Compliance Checks

TTD has implemented stringent audits to ensure compliance with religious guidelines. Periodic background verifications will be conducted to ensure that all employees adhere to the temple’s religious policies.
