Haridwar, Kashi : The secret behind having 59 days in the month of Shravan and 8 Sawan Mondays is attributed to the occurrence of an extra month called Adhik Maas or Purushottam Maas. Adhik Maas is a lunar month that occurs approximately every three years in the Hindu calendar to align the lunar and solar calendars.
In 2023, the month of Shravan starts on 4th July, following Ashadhi Purnima on 3rd July. This time, the month of Shravan will extend till 31st August, making it a 59-day month.
During the month of Shravan, special worship and fasting are observed on Mondays, known as Sawan Mondays, to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. While there are usually 4 or 5 Mondays in a month, it is rare to have 8 Mondays falling in the month of Shravan. The occurrence of 8 Sawan Mondays is a result of the additional Adhik Maas.
Here is the schedule for the Mondays in the month of Shravan in 2023:
- First Monday of Sawan: 10th July
- Second Monday of Sawan: 17th July
- Third Monday of Sawan: 24th July
- Fourth Monday of Sawan: 31st July
- Fifth Monday of Sawan: 7th August
- Sixth Monday of Sawan: 14th August
- Seventh Monday of Sawan: 21st August
- Eighth Monday of Sawan: 28th August
The occurrence of 8 Sawan Mondays in the month of Shravan is considered auspicious by devotees of Lord Shiva. Mondays hold a special significance in Hinduism as they are dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is believed to be the supreme deity associated with destruction, transformation, and regeneration.
Devotees observe fasts and engage in various forms of worship, such as visiting Shiva temples, performing Rudra Abhishek (ritual bath of Lord Shiva’s idol), chanting prayers, and offering special offerings like bael leaves, milk, and water to Lord Shiva during the Sawan Mondays. It is believed that observing these rituals with devotion and purity of heart can bestow blessings, fulfill wishes, and bring spiritual growth.
The extended duration of Shravan in 2023, spanning 59 days, is due to the presence of the additional Adhik Maas. Adhik Maas is considered an opportune time for engaging in spiritual practices, self-reflection, and performing acts of charity and kindness. It is believed that the merits earned during this extra month carry immense spiritual significance.
The alignment of the lunar and solar calendars, the occurrence of Adhik Maas, and the subsequent extension of the month of Shravan provide a unique opportunity for devotees to deepen their devotion, seek spiritual growth, and strengthen their connection with Lord Shiva.
