PhD and NET Now Basis for Professors’ Appointments: UGC’s Strategic Reform
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has unveiled a groundbreaking revision in the recruitment norms for professors across India’s higher education institutions. This initiative aligns with the New Education Policy (NEP), emphasizing flexibility and enhancing the role of academic credentials alongside experience and skill.
New Flexible Criteria for Faculty Recruitment
In a pivotal shift, UGC has now mandated that the appointment of professors will primarily hinge on PhD and NET qualifications. This development marks a departure from the earlier requirement that insisted on graduation, post-graduation, and PhD or NET in the same subject for eligibility. The new policy empowers candidates with varied academic backgrounds to be considered for teaching roles based solely on their PhD or NET credentials.
Draft Guidelines Under NEP
The UGC has released a draft outlining these changes, urging all higher education institutions—including universities, deemed universities, autonomous colleges, and standard colleges—to adopt the revised rules within six months of finalizing the draft. This directive is designed to foster a more inclusive and skill-oriented teaching environment.
