Peace Clubs in Schools to Work for Girl Child Friendly Chandigarh

Mr. Justice Surya Kant while inaugurating a two day Workshop on ‘Tools for Promoting the Spirit of Volunteering, Nonviolence & National Integration’, at DAV Sr. Sec. School (Lahore), Sector 8, Chandigarh, shared that father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi had two aims, the liberation of the Indian nation from the Imperialistic powers and liberation of its masses from all kinds of inequalities and injustices. And we Indians have achieved the first but have still much to do to succeed in attaining the second goal of justice & equality among masses at large. Justice Surya Kant said that Schools can play a great role in this direction be coming institutions of excellence creating young minds with core human values of compassion, care, service and love. The workshop for Peace Clubs was jointly organized by Yuvsatta, Prakash Foundation & Peace Club of DAV Sr. Sec. School (Lahore), Chandigarh. And was supported by Department of Education, Chandigarh Administration. Teachers and students from over 70 prominent Schools of the city are participating in the programme. Upkar Singh, DPI (Schools) said that the theme of the workshop is interrelated and very important because the country is facing massive challenge in these areas. He hoped that the workshop will set the agenda for the school teachers and students to engage in the process of change for the better. He emphasized on teachers to teach students about different cultures & people’s. Setting the Agenda for local Peace Clubs of the tricity Prof. Anil Sarwal said that they at Yuvsatta will like minded organizations and educational institutions will campaign through Peace Clubs for making ‘Chandigarh Girl Child Friendly City’ in true spirit. He said that a change for the better can easily be made in the city as out of over 10 lakh people living in city, 25% are of the school going age. Further 83% of the 7500 teachers working in Chandigarh school are women. The city also boasts of 86% literacy rate. Prominent amongst those who addressed and interacted with participants today includes RK Sharma, DEO, Education Department, educationist Dr. Hushang Garmroud, senior journalist Dr. Vandana Shukla, Narvijay Yadav of Prakash Foundation, an Indicorps fellow from US Divyasurya Kumar, Pramod Sharma, Coordinator, Yuvsatta, Indira Beniwal, Principal, Government Model Sr. Sec. School, Sector 10A & Dr. Vibha Ray, Principal, DAV Sr. Sec. School (Lahore), Chandigarh. Supporting the campaign for ‘Chandigarh Girl Child Friendly City’, in the concluding session Ninette Vas Sharma, wife of Advisor to Administrator PK Sharma said that peace starts from womb to tomb. And how can we have peace with the atrocious human behavior in the shape of female feticide prevalent in our society, which kills baby in the womb. If peace is at home, there’ll be peace in the society. She motivated teachers to talk to students in friendly way and become their true mentor to make responsible citizens and good human beings out of them. If our society has to prosper we have to teach all from a very tender age to respect, regard & care for women and girls with dignity. Summing up the initiative Pramod Sharma, Coordinator, Yuvsatta said that to realize the objective of ‘Girl Child Friendly Chandigarh’ the need is to channelize the vast youth energy present in our city. In the end Ninette Vas Sharma presented autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi & participation certificates to all present.
