Myanmar, a country located in Southeast Asia, has been focusing on improving security on its own border in recent times. The country shares a 2,129-kilometre (1,323-mile) border with China, passing through densely forested mountains, which has been notorious for drug smuggling for a long time. This region is called the ‘Golden Triangle’ region, where the borders of Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand meet. According to reports, the United Nations has stated that opium production in Myanmar has increased since the army took control of the government in 2021. Poppy cultivation has increased by a third in the past year due to the faltering economy and stalled eradication efforts, which has pushed more people into the drug trade.

China’s Foreign Minister, Chin Gang, recently visited the border region and called for stability and crackdown on criminal activities along the border. During his visit, he stressed the need for coordinated efforts from local Communist Party and government departments, the People’s Liberation Army, police, and civil bodies to strengthen the border defense system. He emphasized the importance of maintaining separate and stable borders and improving the crackdown on cross-border criminal activities. Chin also stressed the need for coordination in border management, border trade development, and bilateral relations. China has always sought to maintain contact with all parties and has been pushing for peace and stability in the region.

The Myanmar military’s overthrow of the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi has resulted in widespread violence and unrest across the country. The people of Myanmar have opposed the military-run campaign, which has led to large-scale protests. However, these protests were met with lethal force by the security forces, which triggered widespread armed resistance. The fighting between the military and ethnic armed groups also occasionally flares up along the border. The situation has prompted Myanmar to increase its focus on security on its own border.

The need for better border security is not new for Myanmar. The country has been struggling with cross-border crimes, drug trafficking, and insurgencies for a long time. Myanmar’s porous borders have made it easy for smugglers and insurgents to cross over, and the country has been unable to effectively manage and control its borders. The situation has worsened in recent years, with the rise of drug trafficking and the resurgence of ethnic insurgencies. Myanmar’s efforts to improve border security have, however, been hampered by a lack of resources, corruption, and weak governance.

Improving border security is crucial for Myanmar’s stability and development. It is essential to prevent cross-border crimes, drug trafficking, and insurgencies, which pose a threat to the country’s security and sovereignty. Better border security will also help promote trade and economic development, as it will make it easier for legitimate goods and people to cross the border. Myanmar needs to work with its neighbors, especially China, to improve border security and stability in the region.

In conclusion, Myanmar’s efforts to improve security on its own border have gained momentum in recent times. The country is working to strengthen its border defense system and crack down on cross-border criminal activities, drug trafficking, and insurgencies. The need for better border security is crucial for Myanmar’s stability and development, and it is essential to work with its neighbors to achieve this goal. By focusing on improving border security, Myanmar can ensure peace and stability in the region, promote economic development, and safeguard its sovereignty and security.
