Meta Begins Workforce Layoffs, 3,600 Employees to Be Affected

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, has initiated a large-scale layoff process, which is set to impact approximately 3,600 employees. This move, based on performance-driven job cuts, aligns with the company’s internal restructuring strategy. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has confirmed that this downsizing will affect around 5% of Meta’s workforce.

As of September 2024, Meta employed nearly 72,000 people globally. The company is expected to notify its U.S.-based employees by February 10, 2025, while those working outside the United States will be informed later. This round of layoffs follows previous job cuts in 2023, where Meta let go of approximately 10,000 employees as part of its cost-reduction strategy.

Why is Meta Laying Off Employees?

Meta’s decision to reduce its workforce stems from its goal to enhance operational efficiency and boost long-term business performance. According to an internal memo shared with employees, Meta is looking to streamline its performance management processes and swiftly remove underperforming individuals.

An internal company note stated:

“We have decided to raise the performance management bar and swiftly eliminate low performers. Over the past year, the company has struggled with underperformance, and it is now time for significant restructuring. Generally, we part ways with employees who fail to meet expectations over the course of a year.”

The company aims to accelerate its workforce restructuring efforts, ensuring only high-performing employees remain in crucial roles.

Meta’s Future Plans: Workforce Replacement & AI Innovation

While layoffs are occurring, Meta is also preparing to replace certain job roles in 2025. The company intends to prioritize future development in emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), smart glasses, and advanced social media platforms. This shift indicates that Meta is investing in cutting-edge innovations while refining its workforce to align with the company’s long-term vision.

Key Areas of Focus for Meta in 2025:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) Development
  • Smart Glasses & Augmented Reality (AR)
  • Advanced Social Media Algorithms & Engagement Tools
  • Optimized Virtual Reality (VR) Experiences

By focusing on these sectors, Meta aims to position itself as a technological leader in the digital landscape, ensuring sustained growth and market dominance.

Microsoft Joins the Layoff Trend

Recent reports indicate that Microsoft is also preparing to lay off underperforming employees. While details regarding the exact number of affected workers remain undisclosed, sources suggest that Microsoft is restructuring its workforce to prioritize high-performing talent.

With tech giants like Meta and Microsoft implementing performance-driven layoffs, it is evident that efficiency, innovation, and restructuring are becoming central themes in the tech industry’s employment strategies.
