The Governor of Meghalaya, Shri V. Shanmuganathan met the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh here today and discussed with him wide range of issues pertaining to the State. The Governor, who is also a member of “North Eastern Council” (NEC) headed by DoNER Minister, gave his inputs regarding the working of the NEC Headquarters located at Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. He appreciated the ambience and the library facility available at the NEC Complex at Shillong and suggested that the same could be put to greater utility.
Shri V. Shanmuganathan also took up the issue of constructing an airport at Shillong, in response to which Dr Jitendra Singh informed him that the DoNER Ministry was coordinating with the Ministry of Civil Aviation to expedite the project. He said, he has also suggested to Aviation Ministry, the possibility of a commercial helicopter service.
Dr Jitendra Singh referred to the extraordinary scenic beauty of Meghalaya which had not been explored to its maximum potential. He hoped that with the setting up of a proposed Film Institute in the Northeast, it will be possible to attract more of film shooting units to the State.
Dr Jitendra Singh also discussed with the Governor the working of the Autonomous Councils in the State. He said, under the new Union Budget, an exclusive amount of over Rs. 150 crore has been earmarked for the recently constituted “North Eastern Road Development Scheme” which would also help in the upkeep of the so called “orphan roads” connecting Meghalaya with the neighbouring States in the region.
The Governor informed the DoNER Minister about various charity and social activities initiated by him in the State. Dr Jitendra Singh assured him that, wherever feasible, DoNER Ministry will also come forward and support such activities.
