New Delhi : Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of the situation in Manipur and termed it an ‘abject failure’ that is ‘unpardonable’. In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Kharge reiterated the comments of former Manipur governor Anusuiya Uikey, who had said that the people of the violence-hit state are saddened that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not yet visited there.
He criticised both the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for neglecting their constitutional duties while focusing on political rallies in other states.
Kharge said the people of the strife-torn state are upset and saddened as they want PM Modi to visit them. In the last 16 months, PM Narendra Modi has not spent even a second in Manipur while violence continues in the state and people are suffering the consequences of Modi-Shah collusion.
The Congress leader also said that the Chief Minister’s recent request to transfer the reins of the ‘Unified Command’ – which oversees security operations and is controlled by a team of Union Home Ministry officials, the State Security Advisor and the Army – to the state government reflects a disturbing trend of incompetence.
Kharge warned that the situation has become a threat to national security with reports of drone and rocket-propelled grenade attacks.
Kharge has raised a number of demands on behalf of the party, which are as follows – the Chief Minister of Manipur should be dismissed immediately; the central government should take full responsibility for the sensitive security situation, and take action against all kinds of insurgent groups with the help of state forces; the Supreme Court-appointed Manipur Commission of Inquiry should expedite the investigation into the ethnic violence; the Modi government should not misuse the CBI, NIA and other agencies investigating the violence; efforts should be started immediately to restore peace and normalcy, for which discussions should be held with all political parties, representatives and members of civil society from all communities.
