Amidst the chilly temperatures, both tourists and locals congregated on the iconic Mall Road and Ridge, immersing themselves in the joyous ambiance that only snowfall can bring.
Nature’s Symphony: Hailstorms and Rain
Nature orchestrated a symphony in Shimla on a Wednesday night, gracing the city with heavy hailstorms followed by intermittent rain. This harmonious yet powerful performance contributed to the closure of more than 240 roads, including six national highways, and the disruption of 677 transformers due to the amalgamation of heavy snowfall and rain.
The repercussions were particularly pronounced in Kinnaur and the tribal districts of Lahaul and Spiti, where 165 roads succumbed to blockages, halting vehicular movement beyond Dhali in the upper Shimla area.
Forecast: A Blessing for Farmers and Growers
The ongoing intermittent snowfall, witnessed across five out of the 12 districts since Tuesday night, is accompanied by a forecast from the local weather office. This prediction anticipates heavy snowfall and rain in isolated places within the districts of Shimla, Kullu, Chamba, Kinnaur, and Lahaul and Spiti on February 1.
This forecast brings a sigh of relief to farmers and fruit and vegetable growers who endured significant crop losses during a prolonged drought. The agriculture department spokesperson highlights the potential benefits for Rabi crops, affirming the positive impact of the rainy season.
State of Emergency: Road Closures and Alerts
The State Emergency Operation Centre reports the closure of over 240 roads, with six national highways impassable due to the wintry conditions. Additionally, 677 transformers have been adversely affected, underlining the extent of the challenge posed by heavy snowfall and rain.
An orange alert has been issued for the aforementioned districts, signifying the imminent impact of heavy snowfall. Simultaneously, a yellow alert looms for storm and lightning on February 3 and 4, urging residents to exercise caution.
