New Delhi  : The Indian government takes a bold step by banning the import of laptops, tablets, personal computers, and servers. Learn about the exemptions and conditions in this DGFT notification
The Modi government at the Center on Thursday banned the import of laptops, tablets, personal computers and servers. The notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) states that import of these items will be allowed under licence, but certain use cases are exempted from the restrictions.
This includes import of a laptop, tablet, personal computer or ultra-small form factor computer through an online portal, courier or post. The DGFT notification states that imports under goods rules also do not come under these restrictions. Of these, about 20 items have been exempted from per consignment import license for purposes such as research and development, testing, benchmarking, evaluation, repair and re-export and product development.
Import will be permitted subject to the condition that the imported goods will be used only for the specified purposes and will not be sold. Besides, after the intended purpose, the products shall be either destroyed beyond use or re-exported, the notification said. However, import of these electronic goods is permitted when they form an essential part of a capital item.
