New Delhi : This time, seeing the increase in demand for electricity due to the expected prolonged heat, the Modi government has directed all gas-based power generation stations to keep their plants operational from May 1 to June 30. A large proportion of gas-based generating stations (GBS) are currently unused, mainly for commercial reasons. The ministry has estimated a maximum power demand of 260 GW in summer (April to June 2024).

The maximum demand for electricity had reached a peak of 243 GW in September last year. According to the statement of the Power Ministry, this order will be valid for power generation and supply from May 1, 2024 to June 30, 2024. According to the statement, to ensure maximum power generation from gas-based generating stations, the Modi government has issued instructions to all gas-based generating stations under Section 11 of the Electricity Act, 2003. Under these, a generating company can operate and maintain any generating station under extraordinary circumstances on the instructions of the government.
