– Complex endoscopic surgery undertaken by doctor to completely remove stage-3 tumor
“Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma is seen in adolescent males only, mostly during puberty. Tumors caused from this generally originate in the nasopharynx (the part between the nasal cavity and soft palate). They are locally aggressive in nature, and account for 0.05% of all head and neck tumors. If this tumor spreads to adjoining regions, it can lead to serious problems like deafness, bone erosion, facial disfigurement and eventually invade the brain tissue. Hence, complete removal of this type of tumor is absolutely necessary to avoid additional complications in future,” says Dr Radhamadhab Sahu, Consultant ENT & Skull Base Surgery, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon.
Sonu Sehgal (name changed to protect identity), the 13 year-old child from Bihar had been experiencing difficulty in breathing along with frequent nasal bleeding over the past two months. His parents began to worry when he started bleeding from nose recurrently and his face appeared swollen. The local doctor could not diagnose the problem. It was only when they brought him in to Paras Hospital, Gurgaon, that the tumor was detected for the first time.
“JNA is primarily treated with surgical excision, and the most common approach of this size of tumor used by doctors till date has been open surgery. However, I felt that the child was too young to stand massive blood loss and additional problems which are generally associated with open surgeries. So, we decided to go for a minimally invasive endoscopic excision process instead. It is a safe and effective method that allows greater visibility. However, this particular case was very complex in nature, because it was a stage-3 tumor. However, I felt that it was possible, and am glad that the tumor has been completely removed without the appearance of any facial scars. I can also assure you that there is very less chance of a recurrence,” adds Dr Sahu.
The endoscopic excision surgery took place in the hospital without blood transfusion and an ICU stay necessary. The child’s parents thanked the doctor for determining the right surgical approach at the right time.
