New Delhi, India — May 21, 2026

A major transport strike called by truckers and commercial vehicle operators began across Delhi-NCR on Thursday, triggering concerns over disruptions in the supply of vegetables, milk, medicines, and other essential commodities in the region.

The three-day strike, scheduled to continue until May 23, has been organized by the All India Motor Transport Congress in protest against increased green taxes on commercial vehicles in Delhi and restrictions on the entry of BS-4 vehicles into the national capital.

Transport unions warned that the agitation could significantly affect daily logistics operations across Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh.

Thousands of Commercial Vehicles Expected to Remain Off Roads

According to transport industry estimates, operations of nearly 25,000 to 30,000 commercial vehicles could be impacted every day during the strike.

Among these are approximately 7,000 to 10,000 vehicles involved in the transportation of essential goods such as:

  • Vegetables and fruits
  • Dairy products
  • Medicines
  • Grocery supplies
  • Food items

If the strike sees widespread participation, wholesale markets, retail stores, and local supply chains across Delhi-NCR could witness shortages and delivery delays.

Transporters stated that vehicles participating in the protest would remain parked wherever they are during the strike period.

Transport Associations Oppose BS-4 Restrictions and Green Tax Hike

The transport body said the protest has received support from 126 transport organizations across multiple northern states.

Truckers have accused authorities of imposing restrictions on BS-4 commercial vehicles without adequate scientific justification. They also claimed that repeated increases in green taxes have sharply raised freight and logistics costs, placing financial pressure on transport operators.

Industry representatives argued that the higher operational burden is ultimately affecting businesses, supply chains, and consumers.

“The movement will be intensified further if the government does not address our demands,” transport leaders warned.

Supply Chain and Retail Markets May Face Pressure

With Delhi-NCR heavily dependent on daily inflow of goods from neighboring states, any prolonged disruption in freight movement could affect mandis, supermarkets, pharmacies, and local retailers.

Logistics experts said delays in transportation of perishables such as vegetables and dairy products may lead to temporary shortages and price fluctuations in local markets if the strike continues at full scale.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, though no official advisory regarding shortages has been issued so far.

The protest comes at a time when Delhi authorities continue to push stricter environmental measures aimed at reducing vehicular pollution and improving air quality in the capital region.
