Ayushman Yojana Rolled Out in Delhi: Free Treatment up to ₹10 Lakh for the Needy Begins Today

Body:
In a major step towards inclusive healthcare, the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PMJAY) has finally been implemented in Delhi from today. With this move, eligible families in the national capital can now avail cashless treatment up to ₹10 lakh annually at private and government hospitals across India, including reputed hospitals in Delhi.

The formal rollout was marked by a significant event in New Delhi today, where an agreement was signed between the National Health Authority (NHA) and the Delhi Government. The launch event was graced by Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Delhi’s new Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

Who Benefits in the First Phase?

In the initial phase, Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Ration Card (PRS) holders will be the first to benefit. According to the Delhi government, the registration process will start immediately, with around 1 lakh families expected to be onboarded in the next one month.

Breakdown of Beneficiaries:

  • AAY Card Holders

    • Families: 66,281

    • Beneficiaries: 2,72,248

  • PRS Card Holders

    • Families: 1,68,114

    • Beneficiaries: 7,63,904

Additionally, residents of Delhi above 70 years of age and those possessing both Aadhaar and ration cards will also be eligible.

Delhi’s Private Hospitals on Board?

To encourage participation of big-name hospitals like Apollo, Medanta, Max, and others, the government is considering a tariff incentive of 25–35% above the standard rates offered under the scheme in other states. This is being seen as a strategic move to ensure the best healthcare providers are brought under the scheme’s umbrella in Delhi.

What About the Cardless Poor?

As of now, families in Delhi who do not possess any eligible ration or ID cards will need to wait for further policy inclusion. However, sources suggest the Delhi government is already in discussions to formulate a mechanism to include such families in the near future.

Conclusion:

The rollout of the Ayushman Bharat scheme in Delhi marks a major milestone in making healthcare accessible to the city’s underprivileged population. With more than 10 lakh individuals set to benefit in the early stages, and big hospitals likely to join the initiative, this could set a benchmark for other urban states.
