INVC NEWS  Sonepat – A serious development has unfolded in Sonipat, Haryana, where Assistant Professor Ali Khan Mahmoodabad of Ashoka University was arrested following inflammatory and objectionable remarks made against two prominent female military officers. The comments targeted Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, who have been key figures delivering daily press briefings on India’s Operation Sindoor, the military response against cross-border terrorism.

The arrest came after the State Investigation Agency and local police took cognizance of the highly sensitive issue. Following a complaint lodged by the State Women’s Commission, and the statement of the Sarpanch of Jathedi village, police action was initiated. The Sarpanch revealed having seen the controversial posts on social media platforms where Assistant Professor Mahmoodabad allegedly insulted the dignity of these women officers and the Indian armed forces.

Background: Objectionable Comments Stir Controversy

Ali Khan Mahmoodabad’s statements, circulated around May 7th, openly criticized the conduct and professionalism of Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, along with the Indian Army’s operational protocols. The comments were perceived as not only disrespectful towards women in uniform but also potentially inflammatory, threatening communal harmony and public order.

The State Women’s Commission, led by Chairperson Renu Bhatia, promptly took suo motu cognizance of the matter. The commission summoned Mahmoodabad to appear within 48 hours at their office. However, reports indicate that Mahmoodabad failed to comply within the stipulated timeframe, escalating the seriousness of the case.

Legal Proceedings and Police Actions

The police formally registered a case after receiving complaints from the State Women’s Commission and verifying the statements made by the Sarpanch. The commission highlighted that Mahmoodabad’s remarks insulted women in the armed forces and threatened communal peace. The High Court’s remarks on a similar case involving a political figure in Madhya Pradesh were cited as legal precedent for registering the complaint.

Authorities have made it clear that freedom of expression has limits, especially when comments demean the service and sacrifice of women in uniform and jeopardize national security sentiments. The police continue to investigate the social media activities of the accused to ascertain the full extent of the offense.

State Women’s Commission Stands Firm on Protecting Women’s Dignity

Chairperson Renu Bhatia emphasized that the commission will continue to act firmly against any individual or entity that promotes hatred or insults women serving the nation. The commission’s orders explicitly state the protection of women’s dignity as a paramount concern and assert that such objectionable remarks must be met with legal action to deter similar behavior in the future.

The Larger Context: Respect for Armed Forces Personnel

Respect for military personnel, especially women serving in challenging roles like Colonel Qureshi and Wing Commander Singh, is crucial for national morale. The Indian Armed Forces continue to be a symbol of courage and integrity, especially in operations like Operation Sindoor that are designed to secure the nation against external threats.

The arrest of Assistant Professor Ali Khan Mahmoodabad sends a clear message that comments undermining the armed forces and spreading communal discord will be met with strict legal consequences.

Maintaining peace and unity through responsible speech remains essential in these times of heightened national security challenges.
