Journalist operating from Toronto, Canada, who played a key role in gathering information for atleast 24 non-resident Indians(NRIs) allegedly involved in the Rs 2,500 crore drug racket involving dismissed policeman Jagdish Singh Bhola. Further, the police have identified six NRIs who were instrumental in supplying drugs from India to foreigners via Canada. A senior police officer told that Bhola’s accomplices are John Singh Gill of Woodland California, Sarabjit Singh alias Nick of Baliaon village in Khanna (now in Delta BC,Vancouver), former kabaddi player Harbans (Sidhu is from Ludhiana, now in Toronto – he is also known as former Punjabi newspaper man H. S. Sidhu),and Dara Singh Mathoda from Jalandhar (now in Vancouver),promoter of Azad Kabaddi Club.Police said these individual would allegedly visit the Bhola Cartel in India regularly and were involved in the heroin and other synthetic drugs smuggling worth Rs 20 to Rs 25 crore. Police investigations have revealed that Sidhu ran his own newspaper for a few months, joined the drug trade in 2003-04 and later got in touch with Bhola and drug lord Anup Singh Kahlon.“Together, they connived with some NRIs who are on the run,” police sources said .Despite repeated attempts, none of those named by the police could be contacted. “The arrest of these NRIs is important as they will have much to reveal,”said Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)Hardyal Singh Mann.“The ‘scribe’ was now running a store near the Niagra Falls. Fearing arrest, he has gone underground,” the SSP said. The state police are trying to contact the Interpol for help in arresting these persons. Reliable sources within the police department said a week before Bhola’s arrest, seven main drug suppliers, all NRIs, had held a meeting in Toronto to find new ways to smuggle drugs into Canada. The sources said that more that 32 NRIs involved in the racket had been identified.“Bhola had hired persons in Vietnam and China to pack drugs in air-tight packets to escape detection by sniffer dogs and X-ray scanners at airports, ”they said. Meanwhile, Bhola was sent to transit remand again. The police will again present him in court to seek his remand in the Fatehgarh Sahib case registered against him in March 2013.”The SAD had become a safe haven for criminals. The Badals are harbouring anti-social elements to further their political interests, said Partap Bajwa, Punjab Congress president. Instead of seeking SAD ministers resignation, the Cong should praise the government for acting tough against those involved in the racket, said Sukhbir Badal, deputy chief minister.“Bhola had also hired the services of NRI from Vietnam and China (many of whom are settled abroad and specialise in drug trade and traffic). The gang ensured an air-tight packing for drugs and used special wraps to dodge sniffer dogs and X-ray scanners at airports.“We have many names. Many of these NRIs are regular visitors to India. During their stay, they often do philanthropic activities and sponsor sports fairs and kabaddi tournaments in their villages,” said sources. The police is planning to take the Interpol’s help to nab these suspects..“The accused would be arrested soon. Many of them have gone underground, but we will nab them. The Interpol’s help would also be sought,” said Mann. Mann said the interrogation of those arrested has revealed how drugs worth crores were manufactured in Baddi-based units and later smuggled in a planned manner across the globe. “The Narcotics Control Bureau had also zeroed in on a rice sheller in Fatehgarh Sahib’s Jhampur village which was used for making drugs, in addition to a unit in Patiala. We are trying to get more details,” he said .Apart from Bhola, 6 other persons have arrested in the case.“Two of the accused have bought many disputed properties in Amritsar, owing to their political links,” said a senio police officer. Bittu Aulakh’s Drug Roots: Bittu Aulakh visited Pakistan in 2004 for watching an Indo-Pak cricket match.“Aulakh’s father Partap Singh faced cases of gold smuggling under the Opium Act. He was also a close relative of notorious smuggler Paramjit Pamma Madoke”, said the Patiala SSP.Made in Baddi, sold across globe•The interrogation of those arrested has revealed how drugs worth crores were manufactured in Baddi-based units and later smuggled to various destinations across the globe•Bhola had hired the services of NRIs from Vietnam and China(many of whom are settled abroad and specialise in drug trade and traffic)
