LPG Connection Suspension Drive Targets Consumers Using Both PNG and LPG Services
LPG Connection Suspension measures are being rolled out for consumers who continue to use both Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections at the same address, as authorities intensify efforts to streamline domestic gas distribution and eliminate duplicate benefits.
Following directives from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, local supply authorities have begun identifying more than 50,000 consumers who reportedly maintain active PNG and LPG connections simultaneously. Officials say the verification exercise is aimed at ensuring that government-supported gas distribution systems are used efficiently and that benefits reach eligible households.
The action comes as authorities accelerate the expansion of PNG infrastructure while reviewing the status of existing LPG consumers.
Why LPG Connections Are Being Suspended
Officials have clarified that households already receiving piped natural gas supply may see their LPG connections suspended if they continue to maintain both services without a demonstrated need.
The verification process is intended to identify duplicate domestic fuel arrangements and reduce inefficiencies in the distribution system.
According to supply department officials, more than 50,000 consumers have been identified as potential dual-connection users. These households reportedly have access to PNG services while continuing to receive LPG cylinder refills.
Authorities had previously appealed to such consumers to voluntarily surrender their LPG connections. However, many users reportedly did not comply with the request, prompting officials to move forward with administrative action.
Aadhaar-Based Verification Underway
A key component of the verification process involves matching consumer records through Aadhaar-linked databases.
Officials are comparing data from PNG service providers and LPG distributors to determine whether the same individual or household is maintaining both types of gas connections.
Using Aadhaar identification records, authorities aim to ensure accurate verification and minimize errors during the review process.
The exercise is expected to help identify households that may be receiving duplicate fuel services at the same address while improving transparency across the domestic energy distribution network.
More Than 13 Lakh LPG Consumers in the District
According to District Supply Officer Anand Kumar, the district currently has 87 authorized LPG distributors serving approximately 1.357 million LPG consumers.
Of these consumers, around 340,000 are beneficiaries under the government’s flagship Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), which was launched to provide clean cooking fuel access to eligible households.
At the same time, the city also has more than 75,000 PNG consumers.
Officials say that a substantial overlap has been identified between these two consumer groups, leading to the current verification and compliance initiative.
Suspended Connections Can Be Restored
Authorities have emphasized that the measure does not necessarily involve permanent cancellation of LPG services.
Instead, affected LPG connections will initially be placed under suspension.
If consumers later require LPG cylinders due to relocation, service interruptions, emergency needs, or other legitimate reasons, they may apply for temporary or permanent restoration of their suspended connection.
Officials say this approach provides flexibility while still supporting the broader objective of eliminating unnecessary duplicate fuel services.
PNG Expansion Receives Greater Priority
The verification campaign coincides with an accelerated push to expand PNG coverage across urban areas.
Energy distribution companies are increasingly promoting piped natural gas as a safer, more convenient, and cost-effective alternative to traditional LPG cylinders.
Officials noted that Green Gas Limited has been tasked with adding 5,000 new PNG connections by June 30.
Progress reports indicate that nearly 3,000 new PNG connections had already been issued by June 5, putting the company on track to achieve its target.
The expansion is part of a wider effort to increase access to cleaner energy infrastructure and reduce dependence on cylinder-based fuel delivery systems.
Benefits of PNG for Consumers
Authorities continue to encourage households to consider PNG services where available.
Some of the commonly cited advantages include:
- Continuous gas supply through pipelines
- Elimination of cylinder booking and delivery delays
- Reduced storage concerns inside homes
- Competitive pricing compared with traditional fuels
- Improved convenience for daily household use
Officials believe broader adoption of PNG could help modernize urban energy distribution networks while improving service reliability for consumers.
What Consumers Should Do
Consumers who currently use both PNG and LPG services are advised to verify the status of their connections with their respective gas providers.
Those wishing to retain access to LPG services in the future should remain informed about restoration procedures and eligibility requirements.
Meanwhile, households interested in switching to piped natural gas are being encouraged to submit applications as soon as possible to take advantage of the ongoing expansion program.
Outlook
The LPG Connection Suspension drive represents a significant step toward improving efficiency in domestic gas distribution and preventing duplicate utilization of fuel services. As Aadhaar-based verification continues, thousands of consumers could see their LPG connections temporarily suspended if they are found to be using both PNG and LPG systems simultaneously.
Authorities maintain that the initiative is intended to ensure fair allocation of resources, strengthen transparency, and support the continued expansion of cleaner and more efficient energy infrastructure across urban areas.
