NEW DELHI, India — May 24, 2026
India Heatwave 2026 has intensified across large parts of the country, with Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region recording a blistering 47.2 degrees Celsius while deadly heatstroke conditions in Telangana have claimed at least 16 lives, according to officials.
The severe weather crisis has pushed several states into emergency response mode as extreme temperatures and hot winds continue to disrupt daily life across northern, central, and western India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the ongoing heatwave conditions are likely to persist through the end of May in many parts of the country.
Health authorities in multiple states have also reported a sharp increase in cases of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, especially among elderly citizens, children, and outdoor workers.
Vidarbha’s Brahmapuri Becomes India’s Hottest Location
The most alarming temperatures have emerged from Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, where Brahmapuri recorded a scorching maximum temperature of 47.2°C, making it the hottest place in India.
Several other regions, including Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan, have also witnessed temperatures ranging between 45°C and 47°C. Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh recorded 44.2°C, remaining one of the hottest locations in the state.
Residents across the affected regions have struggled with intense sunlight, dry winds, and unbearable daytime heat conditions. Streets in many cities appeared unusually deserted during peak afternoon hours as people avoided stepping outdoors.
The IMD has warned that temperatures in Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana may rise further over the next few days before any meaningful relief arrives.
Telangana Reports 16 Heatstroke Deaths
The deadly impact of the ongoing heatwave has become increasingly visible in Telangana, where officials confirmed that 16 people have died due to heatstroke across seven districts.
Following the fatalities, Telangana Revenue and Information Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy held an emergency review meeting with senior officials at the state secretariat to assess the situation and strengthen response measures.
The state government announced financial assistance of Rs 400,000 for the families of each victim affected by the heatwave tragedy.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid outdoor exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., when temperatures remain most dangerous. Special advisories have been issued for vulnerable groups, including senior citizens, pregnant women, and children.
Meanwhile, Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh directed all government hospitals to activate heatstroke management systems, including emergency cooling units and ice-pack facilities for patients affected by extreme heat.
IMD Issues Heatwave Alerts Across Northern India
The India Meteorological Department has issued heatwave alerts for multiple northern and central states, warning that dry conditions and strong sunlight may continue for several more days.
In Himachal Pradesh, authorities issued a yellow alert for May 26 and 27 as temperatures continue rising even in traditionally cooler hill regions.
However, weather experts say a fresh western disturbance could bring temporary relief to some areas. Thunderstorms, gusty winds, and light rainfall are expected in isolated hilly regions and parts of Jharkhand, including Dhanbad, over the coming days.
Meteorologists believe these weather changes may help slightly reduce temperatures in select areas.
Monsoon Expected to Reach Kerala Early
Amid the severe heatwave, the IMD has also delivered encouraging news regarding the southwest monsoon.
According to officials, the monsoon has advanced rapidly across most parts of the Andaman Sea, the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, and sections of the Bay of Bengal.
While the southwest monsoon traditionally arrives in Kerala around June 1, meteorologists now expect its onset by May 26, earlier than usual.
Heavy rainfall is also forecast over Kerala, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, and northeastern states during the next four to five days, raising hopes of gradual relief from the intense summer conditions.
As India continues to battle one of the harshest heatwaves of the season, authorities are urging citizens to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and closely follow official weather advisories.
